SciPhy Systems and Artisan Industries Inc.'s recently launched system the ARTISAN X-SR200 is bringing new technology and unprecedented capability to processors' facilities with a first-to-market combination of primary bulk separation, finishing, and decarboxylation all in one system. Today we are looking at the Rototherm®, which is the heart of the X-SR200 and the piece of technology around which we have developed the ARTISAN X-SERIES. This is a proven, pilot tested approach that we are excited to share.

Reducing OPEX, Cost Per Unit, and Increasing Quality - Why We Chose The Artisan Rototherm®

Artisan Industries Inc. and SciPhy Systems were able to identify key processing challenges in the industry - pain points that needed to be solved. After a research project was conducted, analysis lined up with practical experience: for many processors Operating Expenditures are too high to make a profit in the present and future market. Processing systems developed or migrated to the industry over the past decade once seemed sufficient, yet now even premium equipment from years past is lagging behind and driving up the cost per unit of product beyond what is competitive in 2021 and beyond.

To develop a system that could bring operating expenditures down, the Artisan Rototherm® was selected as the core technology. The Rototherm® serves as the basis for the entire ARTISAN X-Series due to its numerous efficiency advantages, superb engineering and fabrication standard, and ease of use.

Why it Works

The Artisan Rototherm® has unique features that make it the perfect core of the X-Series. This technology has been applied to pharmaceutical manufacturing and other chemical separations processes across multiple industries, with hundreds of successful units in operation currently. It is a tested and trusted approach that now sees its first entry into the hemp space with the X-SR200 and X-SR500. The Rototherm® provides robust and compact continuous stripping from 70% (or lower) starting solvent concentration down to trace levels. Continuous solvent stripping eliminates the labor intensive and often inconsistent process of batch solvent stripping typically handled by either rotary evaporators, or pot stills.

Horizontal Orientation Means Total Control

The horizontal orientation of the Rototherm® and high rotor velocity prevent the thin film from being affected by gravity. This provides enormous flexibility with regards to the feed rate and allows for complete control over process stream retention time and final product concentration.

Steel, Fixed Wipers That Are Built to Last

The X-SR200 utilizes only stainless-steel product contact parts, including high precision stainless steel fixed-clearance rotors, which eliminates the need for frequent replacement of PTFE/Teflon wipers or rollers ubiquitous in wiped film evaporators.

Easy Maintenance + Tight Footprint = Less Downtime

One of the core goals of the ARTISAN X-Series is reducing downtime to a minimum. The Rototherm® has a couple advantages in this arena. For one, the Rototherm® is generally easy to maintain as it has relatively few moving parts. The high-durability bearings for the rotor are installed outside the product flow area to eliminate fouling and reduce wear. Additionally, the Rototherm® sits at an easily accessible height and orientation, meaning technicians will have immediate and clear access to all key components of the unit regardless of facility layout.

How it Works

The principles of operation are similar to a vertical thin film evaporator, but distinct advantages come into play regarding the horizontal orientation.

A high-speed rotor creates centrifugal force on the product. This keeps the product feed against the jacket heated cylinder wall at all times. Film thickness is independent of the feed rate or evaporation rate. There are no dry spots on the heated cylinder wall. The evaporator creates a very turbulent product film, quickly and evenly heating the product at optimum heat transfer efficiency. This in turn minimizes the evaporation area, making for a very compact and capable evaporator. Fresh product “pushes” the film continuously towards the discharge nozzle, and the product gets more concentrated as it moves through the evaporator. It is only the force of adding more product to the film which moves the film from the inlet to the outlet of the system, giving the operator complete control over the residence time of the material in the system by simply changing the feed rate.

The result is that the Rototherm® allows for up to 99% evaporation in a single pass. Dry, burnt-on spots do not exist inside a Rototherm®. The process wall remains fully-wetted at all evaporation rates in these ideal evaporators, assuring premium quality product with minimal fouling, flaking, or degradation.
